The PWLL 9-year-old team defeated Saugus, 10-3, on Saturday night to capture the 2019 Sawyer-Walsh Tournament championship at Reinfuss Field in Lynn.
PWLL defeated Reading, 9-4, on Friday night in the semifinals.
In Friday night’s win, Landon Lohnes had two hits and also clinched the game making a leaping catch at third base for the final out. Ryan Skerry and Brayden Beals each had two RBI while Dylan Crosby also scored a run and knocked in a run and Patrick Woods singled, stole a base and scored in the fifth inning to help break the game open for PWLL. Anthony Ragusa drew a key walk in the fifth inning that allowed Beals to score from third.
In Saturday’s championship game, Skerry was electric on the hill, tossing five innings, striking out eight and not walking a single batter; of Skerry’s 75 pitches, 59 were strikes. Ricky Williams came on in the sixth and closed out the win with a pair of strikeouts and inducing a game-ending groundout to Jared Deveraux at second base while Tyler McMahon was solid behind the plate at catcher.
At the plate, Skerry went 3 for 3 while Andrew Wenzel went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Jacob Sylvester had the only extra-base hit of the game, knocking in a run with a double in the third inning. Nick Cimino was on base twice with a pair of walks and also scored a run and Crosby stole three bases. Ty Lomasney flashed the glove with sprinting catch in center field.
Skerry finished the tournament with 33 strikeouts and just two walks over 16 innings while Geo Capo finished the tournament with batters hitting just .091 against him on the mound.
At the plate, Sylvester led the team in OBP (.741) while Wenzel had the most hits (12) and RBI (11). Crosby led the team with 10 runs scored and Lohnes led the group with 20 stolen bases while Sylvester and McMahon had the most extra-base hits (4).
